What To Expect During Your Newborn’s First Days

September 28th, 2011

The first few days with a newborn are exciting, but so tiring! Newborn babies tend to sleep most of the time during their first few days, but in spurts of one to three hours. They wake up to be fed and have a diaper change, but not much more. It is really important to follow the age old advice to sleep when your baby sleeps! The up and down schedule will wear you out. Some newborns like to be swaddled tightly in a blanket. This recreates the feeling of being in the womb. Sometimes this helps calm a fussy baby.Confused? Here ‘s a little help . Make sure to have the nurses show you how to wrap the baby in this fashion. The first few days can be quite unpredictable. Many babies have their days and nights mixed up. Some are fussy and some are calm. Try to stay calm and relaxed when holding your baby. You may have to try rocking or walking with your baby to see what soothes them. Babies will not receive a bath until the umbilical cord falls off, but you can give them a sponge bath. Just be sure to be quick and keep them warm while doing this. The first few days go by in a blur! Enjoy every minute with your newborn.
